After living in the east coast homes for 16 years, one thing I cringe are these textured walls in the west coast. I work with many clients living in the east bay with newer contractor grade homes. When they ask me to design their homes, their walls scares me. However, I'm learning ways to overcome this fear of textured wall by finding ways to make them look pretty, cost effectively!
Do you recognize your wall ?

The biggest challenge of these textured walls are - some of my favorite neutral paints looks so different on the textured walls and forget about wainscoting or board and batten, they just don't look finished!
You can redo the walls for the whole house, but who would want to do, right after they buy a new $2 million dollar home? It would cost you fortune to do that. However, you can consider doing these designs (listed below) for part of the house where you spend more time.
Tip #1 PAINT IT DEEP
We discovered finding paints that are dark, deep and moody colors works best with textured walls. They hide the texture from the wall when you paint it dark. Make sure you go with matte or eggshell finish, because the satin finish reflects in sunlight and it will be too shiny.
Below wall is a combination of a deep paint and wall stickers. We used Behr Black Evergreen paint for the bottom wall and Benjamin Moore 's Chantilly lace on the top, and we used wall stickers to make it look pretty. Easy DIY solution to revamp a textured wall. Perfect for kids room, den, bar or bedrooms.

Tip #2 SAND IT & WALLPAPER IT
I'm obsessed with wallpapers in general, and I would highly recommend wallpaper to cover textured walls and bring a designer look to any home. However, it is important to choose the right wallpaper and right wallpaper material for these walls (that's why you hire me). In addition, prepping the wall with sandpaper especially for a popcorn or knockdown wall is a must. You don't want air bubbles or bumps. I also like to combine wainscoting or board and batten at the bottom and wallpaper at the top. Perfect for half baths bedrooms, or dining rooms.
Tip #3 will describe on how to do wainscoting for textured walls.
TIP#3 PLANK IT & PAINT IT
Another cost effective way to elevate the look of your textured walls is to add wall panels it could be wainscoting, board and batten, shiplap panel, plank wall panel or bead board panel. These style are classic and keeps coming back to style in different ways.
In order to do board and batten look on a textured wall, use plywood to cover the walls first, then add the planks and paint it all together. This gives the smooth look overall and eliminates the texture look. Perfect for small rooms, bathrooms or accent walls.
Hope this article helps you overcome your fear of textured wall too!
